Stanmore Farm Story
Stanmore Farm’s journey began in 1969 when Graeme and Chris Sharp found their perfect getaway on the Kapiti Coast. Graeme, a Wellington doctor, cherished weekends spent escaping the city’s hustle and bustle with his young family.
Initially a Hereford stud, Stanmore evolved into an agricultural farm until it embraced horticulture in 1980, producing a variety of crops like berries and kiwifruit. The farm transformed once more when grapevine production took centre stage, with the first rootstock vines planted in 1989 and grafting beginning in 1994.
That same year, Graeme’s daughter and viticulturist Kate Gibbs, returned to lead the charge toward grafted grapevines, drawn by the allure of family life back on the farm. With a rich career that began with Dr. Richard Smart at Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, Kate traveled the world as a viticultural consultant, sharing her expertise in canopy management and commercialising his research. Kate also worked in sales and education with Robard & Butler, and with Corbans and Delegat Wines as company viticulturist. She continued to consult to wine companies while building the nursery business alongside her dad Graeme.
In 2007, Kate and Tim purchased Stanmore Farm, continuing to support growers with premium quality grapevines, drawing on Tim’s background as a civil engineer specialising in environmental and wastewater engineering.
The Stanmore story took another exciting turn in 2020 when son Harry returned to the family business, eager to take reins of operations and sales, bringing new ideas and a commitment to adding the next generation to the Stanmore narrative. Since his return, Harry has championed regenerative farming practices, earning environmental awards in 2024 while streamlining operations with a focus on automation and digital management.
