At Stanmore Farm, our commitment to sustainable practices is deeply rooted in our history as a family business in its third generation. We strive to be a beneficial partner with our environment.
We prioritise biodiversity by adopting practices that support a healthy ecosystem, including crop rotation and the use of biological products that enrich our soil and protect our plants from disease. By fostering a thriving environment for both our vines and the wildlife that coexist with us, we are not only ensuring the sustainability of our operations but also creating a lasting legacy for future generations to cherish and enjoy.
Our Promise to our land
Our family business, now in its third generation, is deeply committed to sustainability and has been recognized with environmental awards for our soil conservation practices. We follow a method of fallowing land and growing cover crops to enhance soil health and structure, encouraging worms and biological diversity. Our free-range chickens and guinea fowl help control insects and enrich the soil with their droppings. Additionally, cattle and sheep are integrated into our rotational plans to add organic matter and manure to the system.
At Stanmore we have taken steps including using biodegradable mulch and recycling 100% of plastic mulch used on farm through the plasbac scheme.
The creation of Stanmore Forest
Five years ago saw us fence our little spring-fed stream and gully off from stock and start to plant natives. So far we have planted 4500 native plants around the 3.5 ha area and 1100 native plants around the upper wetland site.
This is an important little valley that leads from the hills to the sea and native birds such as Kereru and Tui fly from Kāpiti island and up the green gully to their feeding grounds in the Tararua ranges behind us. The creation of Stanmore Forest corridor will lead them up to the hills they breed in.
We predator trap for rats, stoats and possums. We also ask visitors and clients if they would like to plant a tree/s in their name to add to the growth of Stanmore forest.
