Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Franc 327
Cabernet Franc originally from Bordeaux is normally blended with Cabernet Sauvignon it is lower in tannin, acid and extract with aromas of raspberries and violets, Makes a elegant addition to a blend or a stand alone wine. Better suited to cooler climates than Cabernet Sauvignon as it buds and ripens earlier. Cabernet Franc 327 has open bunches. Imported by Northern Winegrowers/Auckland VIG
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon GRAD®
Cabernet Sauvignon GRAD® traces its lineage back to the original TK Cabernet vines imported by Bragato from South Australia. These vines originated from William Macarthur’s Sydney nursery around 1845. Macarthur obtained his Cabernet Sauvignon through his business partners, Barton & Guestier of Bordeaux, who supplied material from their finest vineyards, including Ch. Lafite and Ch. Leoville.
The original Te Mata plantings used this line, and Tom McDonald also incorporated it into his Cabernets. The vines were heat-treated by DSIR in the 1960s and later regenerated by GRAD® as high-health, PCR clean material. This clone ripens earlier than UCD7 and 8, and is lighter cropping. It produces cedary, red-fruited wines that are very refined and elegant.
A non-propagation agreement is required, and royalties are payable.
Chardonnay
Chardonnay B95
The B95 clone of Chardonnay, originating from the Côte-d’Or region of Burgundy, boasts higher production levels compared to UCD 15. However, its tight bunches make it susceptible to botrytis. This clone is known for its uniform fruit set under cooler bloom conditions and produces a higher number of moderate to large berries. The clusters are flavour-concentrated, resulting in a rich, fine, and well-balanced wine. It features pronounced aromas of tropical fruit, citrus, and toasted almond, with a rich and textured mouthfeel that includes flavours of baked apple, preserved lemon, crème brûlée, and biscotti.
Chardonnay UCD15
The UCD15 clone of Chardonnay, also known as the “Prosser clone” in Oregon, is recognised for its premium quality and moderate yields of small to medium clusters, which can sometimes be loose and exhibit hen and chicken. This characteristic makes it more tolerant to bunch rot compared to B95. UCD15 is particularly resistant to sour rot and other rots, making it a reliable choice in regions prone to these issues. Although it tends to have a lower yield than some other clones, this is offset by its lower susceptibility to diseases. The fruit composition of UCD15 includes lower Brix (sugar content) and higher pH, which can influence the wine’s acidity and flavour profile. This clone is especially suited for cooler climates, where it can produce high-quality wines with good flavour concentration.
Chardonnay Mendoza
The Mendoza clone of Chardonnay is renowned for its premium quality, though it has a low yield due to the “hen and chicken” fruit set. This characteristic makes it a favourite among winemakers. It was selected from Villa Maria in Hawke’s Bay and imported from Australia in the 1970s. Initially, it was believed to have originated from Argentina.
Chardonnay 107
The 107 clone of Chardonnay, also known as the Calera clone, is a recent import from UCD. It is similar to UCD 15 in producing premium quality wine but is more disease-tolerant due to its thick skin and loose bunch architecture. This clone was donated to the Foundation Plant Services public collection in 2001 by Larry Hyde of Hyde Vineyards in Carneros, California. Larry Hyde, a respected figure in viticulture, describes this clone as the “Calera clone.” Hyde Vineyards is renowned for its meticulous care and high-quality grape selections, contributing to its international reputation. The Calera clone undergoes microshoot tip tissue culture treatment to ensure its health and quality. Non propagation agreement required and royalties payable.
Chardonnay R80
Chardonnay 80, a recent import from UCD, is a blending option known for its muscat overtones. Collected in 1996 by Deborah Golino from Sterling’s Napa Valley vineyards, it is one of two Sterling Vineyard clones at FPS. This Chardonnay musqué-type clone, also known as Heritage Sterling muscat clone 3, is favoured for its unique qualities. After undergoing tissue culture therapy and testing, it was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2000. It was imported into New Zealand by a small group of nurseries. Non propagation agreement required and royalties payable.
Cinsaut
Cinsaut GRAD® 1
Cinsaut GRAD® 1 is a late-ripening red variety originating from the south of France, similar to Grenache. When yields are kept in check, it produces a soft and aromatic red wine, often used to add fruitiness, suppleness, and perfume to blends. This particular selection is a heat-treated line of old Cinsaut from TK, known for its high health and good cropping. It requires heat to ripen properly.
A non-propagation agreement is required, and royalties are payable.
Gewürztraminer
Gewürztraminer 1148
Gewürztraminer 1148, imported by NZGVIG, may lack some varietal flavour but is a more productive option compared to other clones.
Gewürztraminer GRAD® 1
GRAD® 1 is an early-ripening, intensely flavored clone with an exceptional genetic lineage tracing back to Dennis Irwin’s famous Matawhero Gewürztraminer. This clone is renowned for producing weighty, concentrated wines that can age gracefully for over a decade.
It is PCR clean, and a non-propagation agreement is required, with royalties payable.
Prosecco/Glera VCR 101
Prosecco/Glera VCR 101
Glera VCR 101 was imported by Dr. Susan Wheeler from Australia with permission from VCR (Vivai Cooperative Rauscedo) in Italy in 2010. Known as Prosecco overseas, this Italian sparkling wine is picked at lower brix, making it ideal for producing low-alcohol bubbly.
A non-propagation agreement is required, and royalties are payable
Grenache
Grenache GRAD® 1
Grenache GRAD® 1 is an early-ripening Spanish red variety. This intensively regenerated and reselected GRAD® line is free of GVA and leafroll viruses, imported by Berrysmith from UCD. The Californian source of this clone dates back to the early 1800s and is known for its tougher skin and resistance to splitting due to rain during ripening. It hangs well on the vine.
A non-propagation agreement is required, and royalties are payable.
Gruner Veltliner
Gruner Veltliner
Grüner Veltliner is the most commonly planted vine variety in Austria. This productive variety produces large clusters. While high yields can result in fairly ordinary wines, low yields offer wines with perfume and substance. Its maturity is similar to that of Pinot Noir.
Malbec
Malbec
Pinot blanc
Pinot blanc GM2
Pinot Blanc GM2, a sport of Pinot Gris, is a vigorous and productive clone that can be susceptible to botrytis. This versatile grape can be crafted into various styles of wine. When tank fermented, Pinot Blanc tends to be aromatic, fruit-driven, and fresh. In contrast, barrel fermentation imparts a richer, more textured profile, akin to Chardonnay.
Typical flavours include pear, peach, raw almond, and lemon zest. The wine often has a dry, light body with medium acidity. Although relatively rare in New Zealand, Pinot Blanc is more commonly found in regions like Germany, Northern Italy, and Alsace, where it produces refreshing and sometimes full-bodied wines.

Pinot gris 52B
Pinot gris 52B is a premium wine-producing clone from France. It is less productive, with smaller berries and bunches compared to the Geisenheim clones. However, it has better tolerance to botrytis, aided by its thicker skins.
Pinot gris 2-21
Pinot gris 7A
Pinot gris 7A is similar to 40A, producing smaller yields compared to the Geisenheim clones. It is known for its good flavours but is susceptible to botrytis.
Pinot gris GM2-15
Pinot gris GM 2-15, a Geisenheim clone selected for production, is known for its large berries and bunches. However, the large bunches and heavier crop can lead to uneven ripening, so crop thinning is recommended for premium wine production. The tight bunches make this clone susceptible to botrytis. At harvest, the berries exhibit good pear flavours and a high concentration of sugar, though they can lack acidity when ripe.
Pinot gris 40A
Pinot gris 40A, imported by GVIG from South Africa, is known for its superior flavours and smaller bunches/yields compared to the Geisenheim clones 2-15 and 2-21. However, it is susceptible to botrytis.

It produces moderate crops of small clusters with small berries and has a drooping, prostrate growth habit known as Pinot fin. The wines are well-rounded with a medium-plus body and low tannins, featuring flavours of rose petal, red cherry, anise, and black raspberry.
Pinot noir 113
Pinot noir 113, imported by VIG, produces an elegant style of wine characterised by raspberry, cherry, and plum fruit flavours. This wine has a medium body and high tannins.
Pinot noir Abel
Pinot noir Abel, known as the sought-after “Ata Rangi clone,” has an interesting history. It was originally intercepted at the border by customs officer Mr. Abel, who was informed that it came from the famous Domaine de la Romanée-Conti vineyard. This clone is vigorous and produces wine with excellent flavour and colour, although it can be a bit later to ripen and more variable than some other Pinot noir clones.
Pinot noir AM10-5
Our scion material is selected from the drooping Pinot ‘fin’ clone, which is popular in Central Otago. However, there is some confusion with a lesser quality “upright” clone also called 10/5 found in some Otago vineyards. This upright clone is more vigorous, productive, and later ripening, and is likely a misnamed clone originally known as D5V12.
Pinot noir R97
Pinot noir 97, a recent import from UCD, is also known as the Swan Clone and is likely a Pommard selection from Burgundy. In 1974, Francis Mahoney, owner of Carneros Creek Winery, initiated a Pinot Noir clonal trial at his winery in collaboration with Curtis Alley, a UC Davis viticulture specialist. In 1996, Mr. Mahoney donated what he considered the five best California heritage Pinot noir clones to FPS. The source of FPS 97 was clone “A” from this trial, originally sourced from Paul Masson/Martin Ray via Joe Swan. After successfully completing testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Pinot Noir 97 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2001.
Non propagation agreement required and royalties payable.
Riesling
Riesling 198-19

Semillon
Semillon GRAD® 1
Semillon GRAD® 1 originates from the 1840 Akaroa colony and was part of a gift parcel of vines given by the proprietors of Domaine de Palot in Bordeaux to two Marist priests accompanying the Akaroa colonists. This remarkable pre-phylloxera, loose-bunched Semillon is PCR clean and features strong vines. It ripens alongside Sauvignon, producing zesty, peachy wines with a fuller middle palate and finish. The loose bunches result in low susceptibility to bunch rot.
A non-propagation agreement is required, and royalties are payable.
Syrah
Syrah GRAD® 1
Syrah originated as the DSIR HT line of the old TK ‘Hermitage’ Syrah, imported by Bragato. The South Australian source vines were selected by William Macarthur from Busby’s ‘Hermitage’ vines at the Sydney Botanic Gardens around 1833. This line is a re-selection from an obscure old DSIR vine in the South Island and is known for being early ripening with loose bunches. The resulting wines are perfumed, elegant, and cedary, with rich red fruit flavours reminiscent of Côte-Rôtie. This clone is consistently outstanding Non propagation agreement required and royalties payable.

Most of the high-quality vineyards in the Condrieu reconstruction of the 1970s to 1990s originated from this single high-health source, considered the Rolls Royce of Viognier germplasm globally. It offers aromas and flavours of peach, lemon curd, ripe pear, and semi-ripe apricot, with medium-sized bunches producing striking, weighty, and supple wines. This early-ripening variety is PCR high health (no GVA). For optimal performance, it should ideally be dry-grown and ripened under controlled water stress, similar to Syrah.
A non-propagation agreement is required, and royalties are payable.
Zweigelt
Zweigelt GRAD® 1
Made in virus elimination experiments by MAF at Ruakura from 1970s Berrysmith import from Austria. Vines were transferred to Marlborough then GRAD® made two re-selections from the best vines. PCR clean, vigorous, upright-growing (easy VSP growing), fertile, early ripening (to about same cycle as Dijon Pinot noir clones or a bit before, depending on crop level). Spicy rich peppery dark red cherry wines with distinctive spice and white pepper finish and fine pervasive tannins. Reliable easy grower and early ripener, eminently suited to N.Z. conditions and very economical viticulturally if grown in VSP. GRAD® 1 is a good cropper and a strong grower: cane prune, leaf pluck, take good healthy harvests. Huge commercial wine potential as a genuine rival to mass production Pinot noir. Would surely ripen as far south as Central Otago, but vines will be much more robust in stony hard and dry soils than Pinot noir.
